Sony Prepping PSP phone

leave a comment »

Finally. Someone at Sony shows some sign of intelligence and is combining their handheld console with their phone device. People have been demanding this since the beginning and it seems that Sony is finally listening. In an effort to create hybrid network of all their electronic to a Sony Online Service, their phone company Sony Ericson is teaming up with the PSP team to create a PSP phone. [via Engadget]

You know who knows everything? People familiar with the matter. In particular, they know everything when “the matter” happens to be Sony’s handheld strategy for 2010, which is said to finally include an honest-to-goodnessPSP with phone capabilities — something the world’s been demanding for as long as they’ve wanted a Zunephone. According to the WSJ, the device is apparently part of a larger push by Sony to create an iTunes-like Utopian ecosystem of products this year that connect to Sony Online Service, an ecosystem that would also include a hybrid portable of some sort that “blurs distinctions among a netbook, an e-reader and a PlayStation Portable.” Details aren’t offered on this particular monster — but turning our attention back to the phone for a second, it’s claimed that Sony’s working with it in conjunction with the folks at Sony Ericsson under the direction of Kunimasa Suzuki, an exec largely responsible for the VAIO line who’s also involved with the PlayStation team. Of course, SE’s already taken some baby steps toward corporate harmony by bundlingRemote Play support with the Aino, but everyone knows that PSP compatibility is the panacea; Microsoft finally buckled on the Zunephone thing with the introduction of Windows Phone 7 Series, and there’s no reason why Sony shouldn’t follow suit.

Sony Wants to Be Part of the Tablet Race

leave a comment »

After the announcement of the iPad, more and more companies are stepping forward saying that they are interested and will become an active player in the tablet industry. Sony being among one of the bigger companies. [via Engadget]

Sony has long said it would cautiously approach the tablet market while it built up its Reader e-book line, but it looks like things are picking up a little steam: CFO Nobuyuki Oneda said the company is “very interested” in the tablet market during his post-earnings report news conference. Oneda said that Sony’s “confident we have the skills to create a product,” and that “Time-wise we are a little behind the iPad but it’s a space we would like to be an active player in.” We could certainly see a Sony device about the size of the Reader Daily Edition making a splash, especially if it’s tied in with Sony’s new push at a unified online experience — and dare we hope for tablet remix of the Dash Internet Viewer (pictured above) based on the Chumby OS? Time will tell.

Sony’s New 360 degree 3D Hologram Display

leave a comment »

Tokyo’s Digital Contents Expo Sony showed off a 3D hologram display. Sony currently is unsure what to do with the technology but has come up with a few possibilities like digital signage or a digital photo frame for the home. But seriously the age of tv holograms begins now.

PS3 Deal $250 at Sony Style Website

leave a comment »

If you haven’t still bought a PS3 right now, like me, then here is another incentive. Sony’s website is offering the old big ones for $250 including a free Dual Shock 3 controller. Not bad. Not bad at all. Article via Kotaku.

Still waiting for thePlayStation 3 to get another price drop? You’re in luck, as the now antiquated, much larger version of the PS3 is now going for a completely reasonable $249 at SonyStyle.com. But wait… there’s more!

In addition to being cheaper (and huger!) than the newer, slimmer PS3, the 80GB model up for offer at SonyStyle also throws in a second DualShock 3 controller for free, making this deal even sweeter. Similarly attractive but more expensive is the deal offered on the 160GB model, the one with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and PAIN also thrown in. Even at $349, it’s more than a fair asking price.

Update: And it appears the 80GB version is now out of stock. Sorry, kids!

Sony Super High-Res Enlargement Tech

leave a comment »

This technology Sony developed may very well be used for their PSP or PS3 system. The possibility of using this as a browser is amazing. You can zoom in infinitely into an area of the screen. It doesn’t enlarge the image but simply just zooms in. Therefore, you will never have pix elation.  The porn possibilities is only limitless. Article via Engadget.

Video: New high-res image enlargement for PS3 and PSP takes extreme closeups to a new level

The GigaPan has opened new doors in ridiculously high-resolution imagery, creating pictures so huge our feeble human minds can’t hope to comprehend them. Sony’s getting in on the action, not so much with the idea of capturing historic events at gigapixel resolutions, but providing the same sort of effect by linking multiple documents and items together and allowing you to zoom from one to the next. The video after the break shows a number of demonstrations, including what looks to be a release calendar that, inside each cell, contains high-resolution photos and even videos of whatever is releasing that day. Hidden advertising is also possible, like a mosquito on a man’s face tagged with an ad only apparent after you’ve gotten uncomfortably close to the poor man’s face. The adult entertainment opportunities are endless. Also demo’d is a new voice recognition library for the PS3, dubbed PS3VR, which can take you straight to your Cindi Lauper albums even if you’re not a girl and are seemingly disinterested in having fun. That tech isn’t quite so interesting, but it and the high-resolution libraries are intended for release to developers… eventually.

3D TVS

leave a comment »

I actually have tested these at the Game Developer Conference. They are really something else. But it is a middle child between our current technology and the inevitable holograms. I guess for now we’ll settle with this. They are pretty neat and it does work and isn’t gimmicky in the very least. I like to think of it as IMAX for your living room and soon enough we won’t ever have to leave home for anything. Thanks to Rindoq for forwarding the story via Engadget.

You know what’s absolutely useless? A video of Wipeout HD being played in 3D, with some schmuck wearing 3D glasses and babbling on about how much fun he’s having. Well, that schmuck is this Engadget editor, the video can be found after the break, and we’ve gotta say: we loved it. Especially for something like Wipeout HD, whose neon-infused tracks make for an almost too convenient example of rapidly approaching vanishing points, we’d say 3D could really be a quasi-“killer app” for consoles going forward — especially if those fancy new motion controllers don’t catch on for Microsoft and Sony. In many ways, 3D just seems to make more sense in a video game than for a movie, and the whole problem of finding content to deliver in the format has already been solved: a software update for the PS3 sometime in 2010 will enable it to provide a 3D viewing experience to “all” existing games on the system. We’re sure there will be some exceptions, but it sounds very promising. The console itself pumps out a quite regular signal over HDMI, which the TV syncs up with your 3D glasses. A 200Hz TV, for instance, alternates 1080p frames, with 100Hz for each eye. Of course, you’ll need a brand new TV, but at least it won’t be restricted to just Sony televisions. Start saving those pennies!
